As part of the Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism, the Carter Center's Mental Health Program began awarding fellowships to journalists in the United Arab Emirates in 2016.
The UAE program is a partnership with Al Jalila Foundation and is the first mental health fellowship program for journalists in the Middle East. Fellows travel to Atlanta to receive training and guidance on projects from experts and other fellows.
Since 1997, the fellowship program has provided stipends and expert training to journalists to report on topics related to mental health or mental illnesses. The primary goal is to increase accurate reporting on mental health issues and decrease incorrect, stereotypical information.
