Featured February 2014
The Carter Center is pleased to recognize Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) for its significant investment in the Center's programming in Liberia. On Jan. 27, 2014, key staff persons from The Carter Center in Liberia, the Swedish Embassy and other partner organizations gathered to officially launch the next phase of the Center's work to improve access to justice in Liberia. With generous support from the Government of Sweden, over the next three years, the Center will continue the important work of making justice more accessible for undeserved rural populations. This new pledge of $7.5 million USD compliments recent funding from USAID, Humanity United, Irish Aid and others. Since 2008, The Carter Center has worked to support justice sector and governance reform by aiding in the process of creating a functional and responsive justice system that is consistent with local needs and human rights standards. Central to this work are deep partnerships with key government ministries and local civil society organizations and professional associations. Working together local organizations such as the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission (JPC), the Center is able to ensure quality programming that meets the needs of Liberians is designed and implemented to maximize impact. The Center focuses on three priority areas: providing effective free legal information and dispute resolution services; strengthening the capacity of traditional leaders to advance good governance; and exploring approaches to link the informal and formal justice sectors. With funding secured in December 2013 via the Swedish Embassy from Swedish International Development Agency, the Center can continue to engage traditional leaders, women, and youth, conduct civic education, and provide free legal information and services to the peoples of Liberia. The Carter Center is grateful for the commitment and support of Swedish Ambassador Strand as both organizations work together with our Liberian colleagues to strengthen democracy and human rights in Liberia, ultimately transforming and improving lives.
