Carter Center Accepting Mental Health Journalism Fellowship Applications for 2003-2004

ATLANTA... Applications are now being accepted for six one-year journalism fellowships with the Mental Health Program of The Carter Center. Designed to enhance public understanding of mental health issues and combat stigma and discrimination against people with mental illnesses, the fellowships begin in September 2003.

  • The program is open to print and broadcast journalists with a minimum of two years of professional experience.
  • Each fellow is awarded a $10,000 grant and two expense-paid trips to The Carter Center to meet with program staff and advisors.
  • Projects are tailored to the experience and interests of the fellows, who will consult with the program’s distinguished advisory board and Mental Health Task Force members.
  • Fellows are not required to leave their current employment.

Interested applicants should submit the following:

  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Statement of interest in mental health and illness, along with activities, topics, or a project that would advance the knowledge of the applicant and others (no more than 300 words).
  • Current work sample (print, audio, or video).
  • Letters of recommendation from two individuals familiar with the applicant's work.
  • A letter of support from the applicant's current employer, or for freelance journalists, a third letter from an individual familiar with their recent work.
  • In your cover letter, please tell us how you heard about the Fellowship Program.

Deadline: Applications for the 2003-2004 fellowships are due May 5, 2003, and the fellowships will be announced Friday, July 11, 2003, on our website,
