Statement by OAS and Carter Center Observation Mission to Venezuela

CARACAS, VENEZUELA…Yesterday the Democratic Coordinator publicly announced their intention to participate in the repair (reparos) process.

The Organization of American States and the Carter Center mission recognizes the efforts made by the National Electoral Council, the Comando Ayacucho, and the Venezuelan opposition organizations to find through dialogue and consensus favorable conditions in which Venezuelans can exercise their rights in this important stage of the process. We believe that they have offered the necessary guarantees so that citizens can assert their will, either by reaffirming their signature or withdrawing it.

We have offered our collaboration as observers to the authorities and officials of the CNE to accompany them in this phase of the repair (reparos) process. In this sense, we wish to reaffirm our commitment to exercise this function with the same responsibility shown until now, making available to the CNE and to the citizens in general our best technical and human resources to assure the Venezuelans that, whatever their will may be, it may be respected.

In order to assure the success of this stage, we call on the citizens to continue exercising their rights and, in this way, contribute to the strengthening of democracy in Venezuela.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and OAS Secretary General César Gaviria will accompany the joint mission from May 29th onward.

CARACAS, VENEZUELA....En el día de ayer se ha dado a conocer públicamente la intención de la Coordinadora Democrática de participar en el proceso de reparos.

La misión de la Organización de los Estados Americanos y del Centro Carter reconocen los esfuerzos realizados por el Concejo Nacional Electoral, el Comando Ayacucho y las organizaciones de oposición venezolana, para encontrar, a través del diálogo y la busqueda de consenso, las condiciones propicias para que los venezolanos puedan ejercer sus derechos en esta importante etapa del proceso. Consideramos que se han ofrecido las garantías necesarias para que los ciudadanos puedan ratificar su voluntad, bien sea reconfirmando su firma o retirándola.

Hemos ofrecido nuestra colaboración a las autoridades y funcionarios del CNE para acompañarlos en esta etapa de reparos participando como observadores. En este sentido, deseamos reafirmar nuestro compromiso de ejercer esta función con la misma responsabilidad demostrada hasta ahora, poniendo a disposición del CNE, y de la ciudadanía en general, nuestros mejores recursos humanos y técnicos para asegurarles a los venezolanos que, sea cual fuere su voluntad, ésta sea respetada.

A fin de asegurar el éxito de esta estapa, hacemos un llamado a la ciudadanía para que participe ejerciendo su derecho y, de esta forma, contribuya al fortalecimiento de la democracia en Venezuela.

El ex presidente de los Estados Unidos Jimmy Carter y el Secretario General de la OEA, César Gaviria, acompañarán la misión conjunta a partir del 29 de mayo.
