President Carter to View Hurricane Damage in Grenada

ATLANTA, GA….Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will visit Grenada Oct. 14-15 to help focus international attention on the catastrophic needs of the island ravaged by Hurricane Ivan last month.

During the visit, he will tour the island to view housing, crop, and rainforest damage and meet with Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, Foreign Minister Elvin Nimrod, Minister of Tourism Brenda Hood, who heads the National Relief Effort, and Sylvan McIntyre, director of the National Emergency Relief Organization, as well as U.S. embassy officials.

Joining President Carter on the trip will be: Edward Kanemasu, assistant dean for international affairs at the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Rick Duke, director of the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Economic Development Institute; Peter Bourne, vice chancellor emeritus of St. George’s University in Grenada; Jeffrey Koplan, vice president for academic health affairs at Emory University’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center and former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Mark Merritt, formerly with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and now senior vice president for crisis and consequence management, and partner with James Lee Witt Associates, LLC; and Habitat for Humanity International representative Torre Nelson.
