ATLANTA…My colleagues and I at The Carter Center are deeply saddened by the death of Vice President Dr. John Garang, chairman of the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement. John Garang was for millions in Africa and across the world a symbol of the struggle for peace and dignity, and his passing will be greatly mourned.
I first met John Garang at my church in Plains, Ga., almost 20 years ago, and we have worked together since that time for peace and the alleviation of suffering among the people of Sudan. I knew him to be a deeply spiritual man, fully committed to peace for the people of his country. There can be no greater epitaph than that and no greater respect to his memory than for all Sudanese to move forward together to fulfill his dream and secure his legacy of peace.
