Carter Center Calls on the International Community to End the Siege of Gaza

Atlanta....The Carter Center expresses deep regret for the loss of life and condemns the unprovoked and illegal Israeli assault on the humanitarian Gaza aid flotilla in international waters. These dead and injured people are the latest victims of a failed policy to lay siege to Gaza and its 1.4 million civilians in an attempt to undermine the Hamas government in the territory.

"These tragic deaths are a terrible reminder that the failed policy of besieging Gaza mainly hurts civilians," said former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. "Now more than ever, the International Quartet, led by the United States, must urgently agree on a mechanism to end the closure of Gaza, reunite the Palestinian factions, and permit unification of Palestinian people in their social and political life. There is no way to realize the goal of a two-state solution as long as the people of Gaza remain isolated and deprived of their basic human rights."

The Carter Center joins the U.N. Security Council's call for an independent "prompt, impartial, credible, and transparent investigation conforming to international standards." The frequent use of indiscriminate and disproportionate force against civilian targets, with impunity, must end for peace with justice to prevail in the Middle East.

أتلانتا - 2 حزيران 2010 -يعرب مركز كارتر عن أسفه الشديد للخسائر البشرية الناتجة عن الاعتداء الإسرائيلي غير المبرر والغير قانوني في المياه الدولية على أسطول الحريةلغزة المحمل بالمساعدات الإنسانية.

قتلى وجرحى هذا الهجوم هم أحدث ضحايا سياسة الحصار الفاشلة ضد  قطاع غزة وسكانه البالغ عددهم 1.4 مليون مدني كمحاولة لتقويض حكومة حماس في المنطقة. "إن سقوط الضحايا المأساوي هو بمثابة تذكير جماعي بسياسة حصار قطاع غزة الفاشلة والتي تضر المدنيين بشكل أساسي"، قال الرئيس الامريكي الاسبق جيمي كارتر.  "الآن وأكثر من أي وقت مضى يجب على اللجنة الرباعية الدولية، بقيادة الولايات المتحدة، ان تتفق على آلية عاجلة لوضع حد لحصارغزة ومصالحة الفصائل الفلسطينية وإعطاء المجال لتوحيد الصف الفلسطيني على المستوى الإجتماعي والسياسي. هذا لأن الحل القائم على دولتين غير قابل للتحقيق ما دام سكان غزة معزولين ومحرومين من حقوقهم الانسانية الاساسية." 

كما يضم المركز صوته إلى مجلس الامن الدولي الداعي إلى إجراء لجنة تحقيق مستقلة وفورية طبقا للمعايير الدولية بحيث تكون "نزيهة وذات مصداقية وشفافة".ان الإستخدام المتكرر للقوة  المفرطة والعشوائية في ظل الحصانة السياسية يجب أن ينتهي لأجل أن يعم السلام والعدل في الشرق الأوسط."
