***MEDIA ADVISORY***
WHAT: The Carter Center’s Mental Health Program invites the media to a screening of the documentary “Requiem for a Running Back,” followed by a panel discussion and Q&A on the issues and stigma associated with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and the toll it takes on caregivers.
WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 18, from 7 – 9:15 p.m.
WHERE: Cecil B. Day Chapel in the Ivan Allen Pavilion of The Carter Center at 453 Freedom Parkway, Atlanta, Ga.
FILM: “Requiem for a Running Back” follows director Rebecca Carpenter’s journey to understand the disease which plagued her father, Lewis Carpenter, a former world championship running back for Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers. After he died, her family received a surprise call from Boston University’s brain bank requesting her father’s brain. He was the 18th NFL player diagnosed postmortem with CTE, a degenerative neurocognitive disorder that can cause episodes of rage, social withdrawal, and other unusual behaviors. After finding herself at ground zero of an unfolding public health controversy, Carpenter documented her story through interviews with NFL retirees, former Hall of Famers, families, scientists, and historians.
PANEL: Chris Borland, former San Francisco 49ers linebacker and former Carter Center intern, Chris Nowinski, executive director of Concussion Legacy Foundation, and film director Rebecca Carpenter.
RSVP: Media wishing to schedule an interview or attend the screening must RSVP by Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. to Rennie Sloan (404-420-5129, [email protected]). The general public may RSVP by sending an email to [email protected].
